There are days when life makes perfect sense.
The sun is shining. The bills are paid. The people we love are gathered close. Our prayers seem to rise straight to Heaven and come back wrapped in peace. On those days, "Hallelujah" rolls off the tongue with ease.
Then there are the other days.
Days when shadows linger longer than they should. Days when the doctor's report brings more questions than answers. Days when grief sits beside us at the table and refuses to leave. Days when our minds become tangled in a thousand thoughts, trying to understand what cannot be understood.
Those are the days that teach us what Hallelujah really means.
The human mind is a remarkable thing. It searches for reasons. It wants explanations. It wants every loose end tied neatly into a bow. We look at the world and try to separate everything into categories: good and bad, victory and defeat, blessing and sorrow.
Yet life rarely cooperates with our neat little boxes.
Sometimes joy and sorrow sit in the same room.
Sometimes gratitude and grief share the same heart.
Sometimes faith and tears walk hand in hand.
And sometimes the loudest Hallelujah is sung by a trembling soul that cannot see beyond the next step.
The older I get, the more I realize that faith is not the absence of questions. Faith is continuing to trust when the questions remain unanswered.
Job understood this.
His world collapsed around him. His possessions were gone. His children were gone. His health was gone. His friends offered little comfort and plenty of criticism. Yet through the wreckage of his life, Job held onto the One thing that mattered.
"Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him..." (Job 13:15 KJV)
That is a Hallelujah through it all.
Not a Hallelujah because everything is wonderful.
Not a Hallelujah because every prayer has been answered.
Not a Hallelujah because every storm has passed.
A Hallelujah because God remains God.
A Hallelujah because Christ remains faithful.
A Hallelujah because His promises do not change when our circumstances do.
The truth is, much of this life remains a mystery.
We do not know why some prayers are answered immediately while others seem to linger for years.
We do not know why some burdens are lifted while others must be carried.
We do not know why some storms pass quickly while others seem determined to stay.
But we do know this:
God has never abandoned His children.
Not once.
Not in the valley.
Not in the darkness.
Not in the hospital room.
Not in the cemetery.
Not in the sleepless nights.
Not in the moments when our minds race with fears and questions.
The same God who walked with Daniel in the lions' den still walks with His people today. The same Christ who stood with the three Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace still stands beside His own.
He does not always explain the road.
But He never leaves the traveler.
That is why Hallelujah is such a beautiful word.
It is not merely a shout of victory.
Sometimes it is a whisper in the darkness.
Sometimes it is spoken through tears.
Sometimes it is sung with a cracked voice and a weary heart.
Sometimes it is all we have left.
And somehow, that is enough.
Because Hallelujah was never about understanding everything.
It was always about trusting the One who does.
So when the winds are favorable, sing Hallelujah.
When the winds are contrary, sing Hallelujah.
When joy fills your house, sing Hallelujah.
When sorrow visits your door, sing Hallelujah.
When answers come, sing Hallelujah.
When silence remains, sing Hallelujah.
For beyond every question stands a faithful God. Beyond every sorrow stands a risen Saviour. Beyond every shadow shines an eternal light.
And through it all—through every triumph, every heartbreak, every unanswered prayer, every mountain, every valley, every tear and every smile—the song of the believer remains the same:
Hallelujah through it all.
